Be Basics: Brioche with StevenBe

Saturday 14 September, 10.30am - 1.30pm

Steven Be introduces another popular knitting technique that will take your projects to the next level. If you’ve ever admired any of the beautiful brioche knits dominating Ravelry right now and thought “I could never do that,” this is the workshop for you! Steven will ease you into the basics of brioche knitting with one and then two colours all while creating a cowl to keep you warm.

Will suit an advanced beginner knitter.

What to pack in your knitting bag

  • A 6.5mm (US 10.5) 60cm/24” circular needle (if you are a loose knitter, also bring 5.5mm / US 9)

  • 200 yards each of 2 highly contrasting colours of worsted weight / 10ply yarn (Steven recommends that one of your yarns be a self striping or gradient if possible)

  • 200 yards each of 2 highly contrasting colours of worsted weight / 10ply yarn (Steven recommends that one of your yarns be a self striping or gradient if possible)

  • A notebook and pen or pencil for taking copious notes

  • Notions, including stitch markers, tapestry needle, tape measure, and scissors

  • A work-in-progress or finished project for show and tell (the desire to be admired is not required—but it is recommended!)

About Steven Berg

Steven Berg, or Steven Be as he is known, has been combining art and craft since his mother Christa taught him to knit as a boy in Wisconsin. By the age of eight, he was creating sequined gowns for Barbie dolls and knew what he wanted to be when he grew up. It was only a matter of time until his love of design led him out of Wisconsin to New York City, where he studied at Parsons and graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology. Since then, his international career has allowed him to lead a glamorous life in Hong Kong, Milan, Paris, and Miami. By 2003, success in the fashion capitals of the world had begun to lose its sparkle, as the corporate life led him further and further away from the creative process he so loved.  When it became clear that something had to change, Steven headed to Rosemount, where his sister Monika Oeltjen had settled. Together they opened The Yarn Garage and set about creating a scene, which is after all, what Steven does best. These days his StevenBe store can be found in Minneapolis, situated in a converted Fire Station, that has been likened to walking into a two-story temple dedicated to a love of the fiber arts. He has a lust for wild colour and texture and has had the privilege of being nominated as one of the top 10 yarn shops in North America by USA Today.
