Estonian Lace Stitches with Cath Ward
If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at Nupps and Estonian Lace, this class will be the perfect introduction.
If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at Nupps and Estonian Lace, this class will be the perfect introduction. Nupps and gathered stitches are the hallmarks of Estonian Lace, developed to prove the hand made origin of Estonian Shawls, and to add weight and value to the pieces. In this class we will knit a sampler together using these stitches and learn a bit about the history of these beautiful shawls. The Lily of the Valley motif is one of many beautiful lace designs using nupps, and the Waterlily uses a gathered stitch at its centre.
Skills required: You will be familiar with the basic stitches used in lace (yo, ssk, k2tog and varying double decreases) and will have made some items with lace already.

Your teacher: Cath Ward
Cath was originally taught to knit as a child by her grandmother, an expert crocheter, but only re-discovered knitting in the last ten years. Inspired by the fineness of her Nanna’s crochet, she has explored many aspects of lace knitting and publishes her own designs on Ravelry. Finding new ways to use traditional lace patterns keeps her very happily occupied and she is delighted to have the opportunity to share her love of lace.
