Cathy explains the process of eco-printing: The fabric to be processed is soaked in a mordant. This creates a chemical reaction, bonding the colour to the fabric. Not all leaves will leave a printed image, so it can often be trial and error. There are a lot of variables involved, tank water versus town water, dry weather conditions can improve the red colours of some of the eucalypts. Leaves harvested in autumn tend not to 'bleed' into the fabric. Shifting the pH of the water in the cooking pot can also give a totally different effect. After soaking in the mordant, the fabric is spread out flat, leaves are arranged on top. I then overlay with coloured silk and then roll it up onto a pipe. This is placed into a large pot, slowly brought up to a gentle simmer, and held at a simmer for two hours. I’ve tried to reproduce some of the scarves and cushions I’ve made, however, it just doesn’t work, so every piece is a unique one of a kind.

Most of the leaf material collected comes from my own backyard and surrounding neighbours and friends. The pecan and casuarina comes from Yarramundi.
