Soft as cashmere, warmer than merino wool, the baby yak fibre  is a smooth undercoat which protects the animals even when the outside temperature plummets to -40o below. Baby yaks’ undercoat is a very fine and extremely strong natural fiber that allows the garments made with this yarn to have an almost infinite life-span and to be handed down from one generation to the next. Exactly like the wisdom at the heart of yak herding and of the manufacturing of the yarn obtained from their undercoat.

mYak Baby Yak Lace is made from the worsted spun baby yak fibre. With a similar micron count to cashmere (17 microns), this a luxury fibre that will yield a yarn unlike anything you have knitted with before.

Two plies are gently twisted together to create a delicate lace-weight yarn perfect for lacy shawls and accessories. To acheive a 4ply weight for shawls and garments, used two strands together. It creates a warm, lustrous, lightweight and breathable fabric, making it perfect to wear through the seasons.

According to the down colour, mYak obtains three natural shades (chocolate, desert and oatmeal), which they dye in order to get the palette of soft colors that evoke the five elements of nature. Most yaks are of an intense shade, therefore light colors are very rare and even more precious.

When dyeing, the colours are put onto the natural bases, with no bleaching or decolouring. Each colour will vary from season to season depending on the shade of the natural fibers, making it at times darker and at times lighter. This is the beauty of working with natural fibers.

A substantial lace

The Myak lace is so intriguing to me. It is soft with a wonderful colour palette and a slight heather. The staff have been playing around with swatches and on it's own it makes a lovely fabric for a lightweight shawl, think heavy lace/3ply, like the Meadow from the Fibre Company. Penny has done a beautiful swatch that is a mini hap shawl in one of the deep pink/plum shades, which you can see instore. Or can be held double for a heavy fingering to sport, almost DK gauge. There are some designs such as the Midcoast Sweater designed for 4ply/fingering weight at a looser gauge that is perfect for Myak lace held double at a gauge of 22stitches/10cm. I am making the Girl's Best Friend Shawl in it with the strands held double and am plotting a cardigan, maybe a Branches and Buds, or a Stonecrop cardi!
