Not far from the Olann studio there is a set of five standing stones called Finn McCool's Fingers (above) in County Cavan. The name derives from the legendary warrior Fionn mac Cumhaill losing a hand in battle. The team at Olann, led by Jess Kavanagh, loved that so much of his life and stories are embedded in the fabric of so much of their landscape, not just in Cavan but across Ireland. So often in his stories, Fionn's strength came from his fingers.

The name of this yarn 'Meara' means Finger in Gaelic.

Meara is a versatile fingering weight yarn that will give knitters strength in their knitting projects. Olann's mission with this yarn was to make a beautiful, delicately dyed yarn; veiled with subtleties, beckoning you to look closer. A yarn that feels soft yet strong, building a rustic drape as it glides through your fingers.

The 100% fine merino fibre is sustainably sourced. The colour, dyeing and blending process is informed by Olann's hand dyed yarn practice. A single colour of the mill yarn is composed of several colours that are hand dyed in the wool. They are carefully curated and blended together in their mill. They strive to create captivating colours, celebrating subtleties that draw inspiration from the surroundings and heritage.

Janine has been knitting a swatch and says, "We are so excited to be one of a select number of shops worldwide and the only one in Australia to be launching Olann's first mill yarn. This is a truly authentic yarn, with a crisp handle that still feels soft in the hand and moves smoothly on the needles. It has excellent stitch definition and I can see that it would be fantastic in lace and textured patterns as well as colourwork. I think I might have to cast on a lacy cardigan! Once steam blocked, it bloomed and softened but has retained its shape perfectly. I'm using a 3.5mm needle and have a gauge of 24 stitches to 10cm; it's formed a dense but supple fabric.

Now I've knitted a little bit, the colours are really coming into their own! I can see all the layers of colour coming through with tiny pops of contrast colours and light and dark shades shimmering over the fabric. It's a beautifully subtle effect that has so much life to it. I love it!"
