Level: You must be able to crochet (completed Beginner Crochet)
Related to crochet and with some similarities to knitting, Tunisian crochet (sometimes known as afghan or tricot crochet) can be used to create a range of items, from light and lacy shawls to warm thick blankets.
What you will learn:
- Tunisian simple stitch
- Some variations of stitches eg. Tunisian knit stitch and Tunisian purl stitch
- Increases and decreases in Tunisian
- Get started on your choice of a simple Tunisian pattern eg. Small shawl, dishcloth or fingerless mitts
What you need: Smooth, light coloured (not variegated) 8ply/DK weight yarn, at least one colour, more if you wish, 6.5mm crochet hook with a straight shaft (ie. Not with a comfort grip). Arrive 20mins before the class if you need to purchase materials.
If you want to make the dishcloth, you will need cotton yarn. If you want to make the mitts, a wool or wool blend is best. For the shawl, a lighter weight yarn is suggested (eg. fingering / 4ply) but you can use DK / 8ply for a warmer item.
Cost: $70 You're also entitled to 10% off all purchases made in store on the day
Your teacher: Jane Downey
Inspired by her grandmother, who would crochet intricate tablecloths without even referring to a pattern, Jane learned to crochet as a teen and has been crocheting now for over 30 years. Jane is a member of the Knitters' Guild of NSW and has taught crochet both for Guild meetings and at the Guild's camp, as well as at several yarn stores in Sydney. Jane has won prizes for her crochet at both the Sydney Royal Easter Show and the St Ives Show. Jane loves crochet because of the variety of projects it lends itself to, and because it's a lot easier to fudge than knitting (mostly!).
