Hannah Ginn and her label Circus Tonic Handmade first featured as our Sisters Spotlight in May 2017 just a month after we opened two years ago, and again in September 2018. Hannah's yarn has long been a firm favourite among local lovers of indie dyed yarn and is known for its sophistication and richness in her use of colour.
With a background in molecular biology and genetics, Hannah took the leap into starting her own business in 2015 sourcing yarns from all over the world to bring knitters and crafters unique, covetable skeins. Over time her style has developed and evolved but the theme of Australian native birds has remained a focus for her colours. Much of her gorgeous colour inspiration comes from the natural world and her vast collection of antique natural history reference books.
Hannah has collaborated with a number of designers, both Australian and international, including Anna Maltz (author of Marlisle), Helen Stewart of Curious Handmade, Clare Devine of Knit Share Love, Ambah O'Brien, Deanne Ramsay of Addydae Designs and Libby Jonson of Truly Myrtle (including Libby's beautiful Skein Sisters Shawl, designed exclusively for Skein Sisters).
This month we're delighted that Hannah has sent us a fabulous collection with completely new colours based on Butterflies of the World, which are available exclusively at Skein Sisters for our May 2019 Sisters' Spotlight. The collection is a beautiful, luxurious range in Fete Fingering/4ply, Circus Single Ply Fingering/4ply and Gold Fireworks Sparkle Fingering/4ply. Each colourway has more than enough skeins available for a garment.
We also have a limited quantity of City Scape Fade Sets, each containing 6 demi skeins of Joy Fingering Sock/4ply. These sets are perfect for shawls like Find Your Fade and Fading Point and, with colours reminiscent of the city they are named for, are intended as vicarious travel knitting to your favourite knitting destinations!
Hannah says: "I hope you love these...they were a lot of fun to dye and I think there are some snazzy combinations to be made!"
As with all indie-dyed yarn, there are no dyelots and skeins may vary within each colour lot. When planning larger projects requiring more than one skein it's recommended that you allow for some colour variation between skeins of the same colourway.
