Introducing Mountains Silk and Wool Works as our Sisters Spotlight for September!
Based in the Blue Mountain, west of Sydney, Cathy Hill is at the heart of Mountains Silk and Wool Works. She says:
"Like so many of you, I’ve always had a love of colour and texture. I started knitting at a young age making knitted “clothes” for my dolls. I commuted by train for many years, this expanded my knitting skills. I love a good Aran and colourwork.
I came to spinning in a very convoluted manner, helping a farming friend with a rather messy job with his sheep. Long story short, three weeks later I’m learning to spin! I took to it like a duck to water. Apparently some of my ancestors were brought out by Elizabeth Macarthur to farm sheep, so possibly in my genes!
I’ll spin almost anything, I love spinning raw fleece, however, dyeing and spinning colour has become a large part of my repertoire. I spin only Australian sourced fibre, apart from the odd bit of silk. Each skein takes at least five hours to spin, but this doesn’t include dyeing and processing time.
Sadly the knitting only happens on road trips these days, mainly for the little people in my life."
