Natural Fibre Arts

Based in the beautiful Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Cheryl Costin is a yarn and fibre artist and indie dyer. Cheryl has been knitting since she was a little girl, and was taught by her mother and grandmother. Her mother loves many crafts including knitting and crochet, and Cheryl always remembers her grandmother knitting each night in front of the television.

In 2008 Cheryl's family went to live in the Middle East in Doha, Qatar. A friend invited her along to a weekly knitting and spinning group, and it was there that Cheryl renewed her love of knitting, and where she first learned to spin using a drop spindle.

Knitting had changed since Cheryl first learnt and she was fascinated with all the gorgeous hand-dyed yarns. She started dyeing yarn and fibre in Doha, where she had the opportunity to explore the local souks and spice markets for dyeing ingredients... and so her dyeing journey began with natural dyeing.

For two years dyeing remained a hobby and for another two years she sold small quantities of her hand-dyed yarn, but on her return to Australia, Cheryl started an Etsy store to sell her yarns. These days Cheryl has her own website, but still maintains a smaller presence on Etsy.

Cheryl loves that, as a dye artist, she can nurture her love of fibre crafts to create art using yarn as her canvas and dyes as her medium. It is important to her to use the most natural products and she tries to support sustainable farming practices and Australian products wherever possible.

As a maker, it is exciting for Cheryl to be a part of and see the growth of the Australian wool industry that we're currently experiencing. She also has an interest in the slow clothing movement and the return of rare and heritage sheep breeds, in fact her yarn includes a selection of blue-faced leicester (BFL) skeins.

We're so excited to be able to share with you Cheryl's gorgeous range of hand-dyed yarns. She has sent us an interesting selection of different bases including merino in various weights, merino/bamboo sock, BFL sock, luxurious merino/silk/yak and sparkle sock, and some absolutely scrumptious merino/silk fingering.

Natural Fibre Arts yarns are available in store and online until 5pm 31 May (unless sold out - which is a BIG possibility!).
