Zealana is a leading yarn innovator dedicated to elevating New Zealand’s already superior, natural fibres with the exceptional properties of New Zealand Brushtail Possum fibre. Ultra soft and exceptionally warm due to the hollow nature of the possum fibre, Zealana's luxurious yarns are ultra soft to touch, light, warm and also wonderfully durable.
Since its introduction to New Zealand by fur traders in the late 19th century, the non-native brushtail possum population has reached staggering proportions largely due to the lack of natural predators that would otherwise maintain an ecological balance - to add some perspective there are 4.4 million humans in New Zealand but 70 million possums. The consequences of rapidly increasing possum numbers are many, including damaging impacts on New Zealand’s native flora and fauna. Brushtail possums consume 21,000 metric tonnes of vegetation every 24 hours and native bird species like New Zealand's beloved kiwi face habitat destruction and nest invasion by the possums. Zealana is committed to the responsible and sustainable management of the brushtail possum population in New Zealand and the production of their yarn using possum fibre helps make New Zealand's ecosystem a lot healthier.
Zealana yarns use high quality natural fibers, including fine merino and cashmere, and superior yarn manufacturing to produce some of the finest and most luxurious hand knitting and crochet yarns available.
