Join us for a fun and practical crochet class and create your own reusable market bag – perfect for gifting, for trips to the shops, the farmers’ market or your latest yarn haul!

In this two-hour workshop, you’ll learn how to crochet a roomy, lightweight market bag using 100% cotton yarn. The clever mesh design creates a surprisingly stretchy bag while using less than 100g of yarn, making it a great project for using up your stash.

You’ll start your market bag during the class and leave with the skills and confidence you need to finish it at home. Your class fee includes the crochet pattern so you can make more bags later – for yourself or as fabulous handmade gifts.

With a maximum of six students in the class, you’ll have plenty of individual guidance from your teacher as you work through each stage of the project.

Skills Needed

Suitable for advanced beginner crocheters. Please note: this is not an absolute beginner crochet class. If you can't crochet the basic stitches then our Beginner Crochet class is the perfect choice for you. 

If you're left-handed it will not affect your ability to learn and enjoy this class. Crochet can be taught to left and right-handed crafters equally well.

 

What To Bring

You're entitled to 10% off any purchases of yarn, accessories and books made in store on the day. If you're planning on purchasing your yarn for the class on the day please arrive at least 20 minutes before your class start time and our friendly shop staff will help you with your selection.

There is no preparation for this class.

If you need to purchase materials on the day of your class please arrive 20 minutes early and we’ll help you with your selection.

You’ll receive a 10% discount on any yarn, notions and book purchases you make in store on the day.

  • The double doors on New Canterbury Road allow for flat access to the shop.

Parking

  • There is plenty of all-day and two-hour parking around Skein Sisters. 
  • Parking along New Canterbury Road, directly outside the shop, allows for access to the shop for those using wheelchairs or disability scooters. 

Public Transport

  • We are a 10-minute walk from Hurlstone Park train station, as well as Dulwich Grove Light Rail station. Buses also run along New Canterbury Road past the shop.

Cancellation

You can cancel a class booking...

  • Up to 7 days before the class – you are able to cancel and receive a full refund.
  • 7 days – 72 hours before the class – we are able to offer a credit but we cannot guarantee a full refund unless another booking fills your spot.
  • Less than 72 hours before the class – no credit or refund available.

Class Terms & Conditions

Full payment is required prior to the start of the class to confirm your spot.

Minimum numbers – All classes require a minimum of three people in order to go ahead and, depending on the class, a maximum of ten. If your class or workshop does not have the minimum number of students, the class will be postponed and you will be notified within three days of the class date if it has been cancelled or changed. We cannot be held liable for travel or any other costs in the event of a cancellation.

If your class is postponed or cancelled you can use the amount paid to transfer to another event/activity, use it as a store credit, or be issued a full refund.

Jane Downey

Inspired by her grandmother, who would crochet intricate thread tablecloths without even referring to a pattern, Jane learned to crochet as a teen and now has almost 40 years of experience.

Jane is a member of the Crochet Guild of Australia and the Knitters’ Guild of NSW and has been teaching crochet for over 15 years. She teaches adults and children in both open classes and one-on-one classes, from beginner to more advanced techniques. Jane can teach both right and left handed people to crochet, and is often described as a very patient teacher. Jane is accredited to teach crochet by the Crochet Guild of Australia.

Jane has won prizes for her crochet at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, including being twice chosen for display in the Standard of Excellence cabinet. Jane has also judged the crochet at the Sydney Royal (not the same years in which she won prizes!). Jane loves crochet because of the variety of projects it lends itself to. She particularly likes to crochet garments, accessories and toys.
