This yarn is a soft blend of alpaca and nylon, giving it the warmth you want in handmade socks with the resilience to wear well. It works beautifully for socks but is just as lovely for shawls, accessories and lightweight garments. The stitch definition is clean and even, and the yarn has a smooth drape with just enough bounce.

Sox is kettle dyed in a rich palette of tonal colours. The dyeing process creates a semi-solid or heathered effect, adding gentle variation across your fabric.

It’s machine washable on a gentle cycle and even dryer friendly, making it practical for everyday wear. The alpaca is put through a new Sustainable Easy Wash treatment where enzymes eat part of the alpaca fibre that causes shrinkage. No acids or hard chemicals are used.

Yarn Weight vs Yarn Ply

"Ply" technically refers to the construction of the yarn. It's the number of strands that are twisted together to make a single piece of yarn. While "ply" historically related to the thickness (or weight) of the yarn, today's spinning technology means that the number of plies doesn't always correspond directly to the thickness of the yarn.

However, in some countries, including Australia & the UK, the numbering system of yarn ply still refers to the thickness of the yarn, so it's possible to have a single ply 4ply yarn! - this means that the yarn is constructed of a single ply, but has the traditional thickness of a 4ply sock / fingering yarn).

Alpaca Yarns began as a holiday. Jan was in Peru, walked through one of the world's great alpaca mills – Arequipa is where a huge share of the country's alpaca is combed and spun – and came home unable to let it go. There was a gap on the shelves here, and nobody was filling it.

So she took a considerable risk: her own first collection, spun entirely at that mill. That was about a decade ago. It's many ranges deep now, still run out of New Zealand, and still by Jan.

She flies over to see us two or three times a year, and we chat about where the gaps are – the yarn people keep asking for that nobody's making. If she thinks it can be done, she has it made. That's how a machine-washable alpaca comes to exist, which isn't something you can say about most alpaca.
