Yarn Weight vs Yarn Ply

"Ply" technically refers to the construction of the yarn. It's the number of strands that are twisted together to make a single piece of yarn. While "ply" historically related to the thickness (or weight) of the yarn, today's spinning technology means that the number of plies doesn't always correspond directly to the thickness of the yarn.

However, in some countries, including Australia & the UK, the numbering system of yarn ply still refers to the thickness of the yarn, so it's possible to have a single ply 4ply yarn! - this means that the yarn is constructed of a single ply, but has the traditional thickness of a 4ply sock / fingering yarn).

BC Garn

BC Garn began in 1972 with Bo Carstensen, who came by it honestly – his mother was a weaver, his father traded rug wool, and she had already started having her own yarns made because she couldn't find the colours she wanted.

In 2018 Bo and Marianna retired and handed the company to Britta and Carsten Kremke – whose initials, happily, still fit. Britta learned to knit at eight in her mother's yarn shop, and by twenty-one she had a shop of her own.

They work in natural fibre only: wool, silk, cotton and linen, much of it organic and certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard – which follows the fibre the whole way, from the welfare of the animals to the dyes, the wastewater, and fair pay for everyone whose hands it passes through.
