Why you'll love it

Bellissimo 8 is a much-loved staple for knitters and crocheters looking for comfort, quality and colour. Made from 100% extra-fine Australian merino wool, it’s wonderfully soft against the skin yet holds its shape well, making it ideal for everything from baby wear and blankets to jumpers, shawls and accessories. It's one of our most popular yarns, and for good reason!

This yarn has a smooth, tight twist that produces excellent stitch definition, giving texture, lace and colourwork a crisp, polished look. It glides easily through the hands, drapes softly and blocks beautifully. And while it’s not a superwash yarn, it’s fully machine washable, making it perfect for gifts, everyday garments and anything else that needs a little extra practicality.

With 59 colours, the palette spans rich jewel tones, soft pastels and classic neutrals, each dyed with clarity and depth. Whether you’re making a cherished baby blanket or your next favourite jumper, Bellissimo 8 delivers a smooth, satisfying experience from cast-on to final stitch.

This beautiful yarn is made from extra-fine merino wool sourced in Tasmania, then expertly milled, spun and dyed in Italy. Processing takes place using pure melted snow from the Italian Alps, at a mill nestled partway up the mountain. Once complete, the water continues downstream and is reused to irrigate the famed Arborio rice fields around Novara – a thoughtful, sustainable touch that reflects the care behind every ball.

A true favourite in the Skein Sisters community, this yarn combines softness, stitch definition and ease of care in one beautiful ball.

    Yarn Weight vs Yarn Ply

"Ply" technically refers to the construction of the yarn. It's the number of strands that are twisted together to make a single piece of yarn. While "ply" historically related to the thickness (or weight) of the yarn, today's spinning technology means that the number of plies doesn't always correspond directly to the thickness of the yarn.

However, in some countries, including Australia & the UK, the numbering system of yarn ply still refers to the thickness of the yarn, so it's possible to have a single ply 4ply yarn! - this means that the yarn is constructed of a single ply, but has the traditional thickness of a 4ply sock / fingering yarn).

    Beautiful to work with

This wool is a delight to work with! I'll be buying more in different colours for warm and lightweight projects.

    Perfect

I’ve only just learnt how to knit and I was hesitant to buy “proper” high-quality wool in case I stuffed my project up. I should have done it much, much earlier. This yarn is absolutely wonderful to work with, soft and strong. I’ve knitted two hats in different patterns and both turned out superb. I cannot recommend it enough - colours are true to pictures shown.

    Soft and Smooth

This yarn feels so soft to touch when you pick up the ball you just have the urge to squeeze it! It is no surprise that the knitted piece is equally luxurious. This is the yarn to choose for next to sensitive skin. The strands are very smooth and rounded and just slides off your needles like a dream. I’m making a blanket from it with big lacy holes and the stitch definition and drape are perfect for it. The shop sample garter blanket is very squishy and the colour range is fab. However, it is very versatile beyond baby and kids knits. We have had many return customers for beanies and scarves too. They report that gift recipients who usually complain about the general scratchiness of wool items cannot find fault in this smooth superfine merino.
