A guided tour of the possibilities of centre out cast ons and shaping.

Knitting from the centre out opens up a whole world of shapes – squares and other polygons, rectangles, almonds and the classic circular pi shawl. In this class Xandy Peters shows you three different centre out cast on methods and the unique strengths of each.

Once you’ve cast on, you’ll try out different arrangements and types of increases to build different shawl, blanket and scarf shapes. Xandy will also show you how many traditional lace and colourwork motifs can be converted to work with these shapes for spectacular results.

By the end of the class you’ll feel confident using centre out cast ons to create your own accessories and adding stitch and colour patterns to all sorts of shapes.

Skills Needed

Intermediate – best suited to intermediate knitters or adventurous beginners who have experience with cast ons, reading patterns and working basic increases and decreases.

  • There is plenty of all-day and two-hour parking around Skein Sisters. 
  • Parking along New Canterbury Road, directly outside the shop, allows for access to the shop for those using wheelchairs or disability scooters. 

Public Transport

  • We are a 10-minute walk from Hurlstone Park train station, as well as Dulwich Grove Light Rail station. Buses also run along New Canterbury Road past the shop.

Cancellation

You can cancel a class booking...

  • Up to 7 days before the class – you are able to cancel and receive a full refund.
  • 7 days – 72 hours before the class – we are able to offer a credit but we cannot guarantee a full refund unless another booking fills your spot.
  • Less than 72 hours before the class – no credit or refund available.
  • When the booking is for a multi-session course, the following applies: Once the course has started, no refunds or store credits are available. Missed sessions within a course cannot be refunded, rescheduled or transferred individually.

Class Terms & Conditions

Full payment is required prior to the start of the class to confirm your spot.

Minimum numbers – All classes require a minimum of three people in order to go ahead and, depending on the class, a maximum of ten. If your class or workshop does not have the minimum number of students, the class will be postponed and you will be notified within three days of the class date if it has been cancelled or changed. We cannot be held liable for travel or any other costs in the event of a cancellation.

If your class is postponed or cancelled you can use the amount paid to transfer to another event/activity, use it as a store credit, or be issued a full refund.

Xandy Peters

Xandy Peters is a knitting designer and teacher, best known as the innovator of the stacked stitch technique and for the Fox Paws pattern. Starting out as a footwear and product designer, he turned to knitting as a way to explore textiles and surfaces without factory production, and has since made a career out of publishing new patterns and teaching workshops.

His designs have appeared in Vogue Knitting, Twist Collective, Knitscene, Knitty and Pom Pom Quarterly, and he teaches stacked stitches in his Craftsy class. Xandy says: “I want to encourage knitters of all levels to use their craft as a form of self expression, to try new techniques, and to share their projects and experiences.”
