Learn strategies to help you choose colours and fix uninspiring combinations.

Do you ever find yourself choosing the same safe colours, or standing in front of a wall of yarn not knowing where to start? In this interactive, conversational class Xandy Peters will help you find your own colour sense – and show you how to explore combinations without the expense of yarn or hours of swatching.

The class begins with colouring pages, a fun and surprisingly revealing way to explore the colour choices you make instinctively. Xandy then introduces the fundamentals of colour interaction and theory – the colour wheel, some fascinating history, and quick colour-ups from his background in the fashion industry. Colouring and experimenting with your own craft during the presentation is encouraged.

In the second half of the class everyone shares their colouring pages and homework. It’s a wonderful way to see the huge range of palettes and colour perspectives in one room, and how much a pattern changes with colour.

In this class you’ll learn…

  • How to use colouring pages to explore colour before you commit to yarn
  • The fundamentals of colour theory and the colour wheel
  • How colours interact and change each other
  • Quick methods for trying out colour combinations without swatching
  • How to rescue a combination that isn’t working
Skills Needed

All levels – open to every level and every craft. Knitters, crocheters, spinners and anyone who works with colour are all welcome.

What To Bring

You’ll need to bring:

  • Your completed homework – a colouring page or a stripe contrast swatch
  • Your own colouring supplies, if you’d like to use them – pencils, crayons or markers
  • Any “difficult” yarns, spinning fibre, fabric or colour inspiration you’d like to work through with Xandy
Class Prep

You have homework! Before class, fill in at least one colouring page (on paper or a digital printout) or knit a stripe contrast swatch, and bring it along to share. We’ll send you Xandy’s colouring pages before the class.

If you need to purchase materials on the day of your class please arrive 20 minutes early and we’ll help you with your selection.

You’ll receive a 10% discount on any yarn, notions and book purchases you make in store on the day.

  • The main shop is accessible to all.
  • The double doors on New Canterbury Road allow for flat access to the shop.

Parking

  • There is plenty of all-day and two-hour parking around Skein Sisters. 
  • Parking along New Canterbury Road, directly outside the shop, allows for access to the shop for those using wheelchairs or disability scooters. 

Public Transport

  • We are a 10-minute walk from Hurlstone Park train station, as well as Dulwich Grove Light Rail station. Buses also run along New Canterbury Road past the shop.

Cancellation

You can cancel a class booking...

  • Up to 7 days before the class – you are able to cancel and receive a full refund.
  • 7 days – 72 hours before the class – we are able to offer a credit but we cannot guarantee a full refund unless another booking fills your spot.
  • Less than 72 hours before the class – no credit or refund available.
  • When the booking is for a multi-session course, the following applies: Once the course has started, no refunds or store credits are available. Missed sessions within a course cannot be refunded, rescheduled or transferred individually.

Class Terms & Conditions

Full payment is required prior to the start of the class to confirm your spot.

Minimum numbers – All classes require a minimum of three people in order to go ahead and, depending on the class, a maximum of ten. If your class or workshop does not have the minimum number of students, the class will be postponed and you will be notified within three days of the class date if it has been cancelled or changed. We cannot be held liable for travel or any other costs in the event of a cancellation.

If your class is postponed or cancelled you can use the amount paid to transfer to another event/activity, use it as a store credit, or be issued a full refund.

Xandy Peters

Xandy Peters is a knitting designer and teacher, best known as the innovator of the stacked stitch technique and for the Fox Paws pattern. Starting out as a footwear and product designer, he turned to knitting as a way to explore textiles and surfaces without factory production, and has since made a career out of publishing new patterns and teaching workshops.

His designs have appeared in Vogue Knitting, Twist Collective, Knitscene, Knitty and Pom Pom Quarterly, and he teaches stacked stitches in his Craftsy class. Xandy says: “I want to encourage knitters of all levels to use their craft as a form of self expression, to try new techniques, and to share their projects and experiences.”
