Why you'll love it

La Bella Fingering from Great Ocean Road Woollen Mill (GOR) is a luxurious 4ply blend of superfine merino and alpaca, spun in Australia in beautifully natural, undyed shades. It offers warmth without bulk and a gentle halo that elevates even the simplest stitches. Customers have told us that it feels like cashmere!

This 2-strand construction creates a light yet cosy fabric, perfect for shawls, lightweight jumpers, cardigans and delicate accessories. The blend combines the elasticity and smoothness of superfine merino with the softness and warmth of alpaca, resulting in a fabric with lovely drape and subtle texture.

Spun in Burrumbeet, Victoria, La Bella Fingering is locally sourced, non-mulesed, biodegradable and free from chemical treatments. The colour palette comes entirely from the natural fleece of merino and alpaca. Each shade celebrates the quiet beauty of undyed fibre and the integrity of small-batch Australian production.

Because the yarn is minimally processed, it’s important to knit or crochet, wash and block a swatch to ensure your gauge is accurate, as slight shrinkage can occur.

The natural colours are made up of the following:

  • Crema - natural white merino and natural white alpaca
  • Light Grey - natural white merino and black alpaca
  • Mid Grey - natural white merino and black alpaca
  • Rose Grey - natural white merino and rose grey alpaca
  • Butterscotch - 20% toffee coloured alpaca/ 80% merino. Made from the fleece of their own alpaca, Aristaeus.

For makers who value softness, provenance and understated natural colour, La Bella Fingering brings warmth, sustainability and a sense of connection to every stitch.

Yarn Weight vs Yarn Ply

"Ply" technically refers to the construction of the yarn. It's the number of strands that are twisted together to make a single piece of yarn. While "ply" historically related to the thickness (or weight) of the yarn, today's spinning technology means that the number of plies doesn't always correspond directly to the thickness of the yarn.

However, in some countries, including Australia & the UK, the numbering system of yarn ply still refers to the thickness of the yarn, so it's possible to have a single ply 4ply yarn! - this means that the yarn is constructed of a single ply, but has the traditional thickness of a 4ply sock / fingering yarn).
