Why you'll love it

La Bella DK from Great Ocean Road Woollen Mill is a superfine merino and alpaca blend, spun in Australia in naturally undyed shades. It offers luxurious softness, gentle warmth and a truly traceable story — from fleece to finished skein.

This 8ply / DK weight yarn is ideal for cosy sweaters, cardigans, scarves and winter accessories that call for warmth without heaviness. The 3-strand construction creates a balanced, lofty fabric with lovely stitch definition and a soft halo from the alpaca. It feels plush and comforting in the hands, making both knitting and crochet a pleasure.

Spun in Burrumbeet, Victoria, La Bella DK is locally sourced, non-mulesed, biodegradable and free from chemical treatments. The palette comes entirely from the natural fleece colours of merino and alpaca.

As this yarn is minimally processed, it’s important to knit or crochet, wash and block a swatch to check gauge, as slight shrinkage can occur.

The natural colours are made up of the following:

  • Crema - natural white merino and natural white alpaca
  • Light Grey - natural white merino and black alpaca
  • Mid Grey - natural white merino and black alpaca
  • Butterscotch - 20% toffee coloured alpaca/ 80% merino. Made from the fleece of their own alpaca, Aristaeus.

For makers who value softness, sustainability and knowing exactly where their yarn comes from, La Bella DK brings warmth and integrity to every stitch.

Yarn Weight vs Yarn Ply

"Ply" technically refers to the construction of the yarn. It's the number of strands that are twisted together to make a single piece of yarn. While "ply" historically related to the thickness (or weight) of the yarn, today's spinning technology means that the number of plies doesn't always correspond directly to the thickness of the yarn.

However, in some countries, including Australia & the UK, the numbering system of yarn ply still refers to the thickness of the yarn, so it's possible to have a single ply 4ply yarn! - this means that the yarn is constructed of a single ply, but has the traditional thickness of a 4ply sock / fingering yarn).
