Kremke Soul Wool Papyrus yarn is made from natural raffia/bast paper and is the perfect yarn to make your own bags, baskets, placemats, a summer hat, or much more! Available in a range of strong, vivid colours and also subtle pastel and earth shades, it's gorgeous when either single or multiple colours are used in your project!

Kremke Soul Wool Papyrus is produced from paper, but is water-resistant and may be wiped with a damp cloth. The yarn is flexible, although it handles differently from wool or cotton, and it maintains its flexibility after it's crocheted. Due to the innovative production method, an endless thread can be produced which means that knotting of threads with short yardage within balls is no longer required.

Yarn Weight vs Yarn Ply

"Ply" technically refers to the construction of the yarn. It's the number of strands that are twisted together to make a single piece of yarn. While "ply" historically related to the thickness (or weight) of the yarn, today's spinning technology means that the number of plies doesn't always correspond directly to the thickness of the yarn.

However, in some countries, including Australia & the UK, the numbering system of yarn ply still refers to the thickness of the yarn, so it's possible to have a single ply 4ply yarn! - this means that the yarn is constructed of a single ply, but has the traditional thickness of a 4ply sock / fingering yarn).

Kremke Soul Wool

Britta and Carsten Kremke nearly named this brand Slow Wool, after the Slow Food movement – which tells you most of what you need to know. A yarn only joins the range if the knitting of it is a pleasure in itself. No finger-thick quick-knits. No synthetic-heavy blends.

Britta has knitted since she was eight, in her mother's yarn shop in Hamburg, and by twenty-one she was the youngest yarn-shop owner in Germany. She still personally tests every product that carries the name.

What they're after is fine, soft, natural yarn at a fair price – combinations that simply aren't made elsewhere, filling the gaps the big brands leave. All their wool is mulesing-free, their mohair is certified to the Responsible Mohair Standard, and there are vegan and recycled yarns for anyone who'd rather not use animal fibre at all.
