Naturally Yarns Pacific Lace mohair /silk yarn fills all your mohair needs. This delicate 2ply / laceweight yarn is a luxurious blend of mohair and silk. The silk provides a thread core with the mohair embedded within and surrounding it.

Use mohair on its own for beautifully ethereal and filmy projects, especially if made up on larger needles or hooks, or hold it double with any other yarn to add that touch of fluff. Find a colour that matches exactly or be bold and create a marled effect with a contrasting colour.

Yarn Weight vs Yarn Ply

"Ply" technically refers to the construction of the yarn. It's the number of strands that are twisted together to make a single piece of yarn. While "ply" historically related to the thickness (or weight) of the yarn, today's spinning technology means that the number of plies doesn't always correspond directly to the thickness of the yarn.

However, in some countries, including Australia & the UK, the numbering system of yarn ply still refers to the thickness of the yarn, so it's possible to have a single ply 4ply yarn! - this means that the yarn is constructed of a single ply, but has the traditional thickness of a 4ply sock / fingering yarn).

Back in the 1980s Went Ferdinands ran a yarn business in Auckland, and he had one dream – to get a ball of yarn into every retailer in New Zealand, under a label of his own. He sat down to work out how, scribbled the word 'Naturally' on a scrap of paper, and there it was.

The first yarn was exactly as plain as it sounds: un-dyed New Zealand spun wool, sold in hanks. It stayed that way for a good long while. The label crossed to Australia in 2001, and that's when the fashion yarns started turning up alongside the plain wool.

Since 2007 the business has belonged to Vimar 1991, an Italian yarn producer – and it still keeps the 'Made in New Zealand' at the heart of the Naturally range, made from local wool and backing New Zealand wool growers wherever it can.
