Yarn Weight vs Yarn Ply

"Ply" technically refers to the construction of the yarn. It's the number of strands that are twisted together to make a single piece of yarn. While "ply" historically related to the thickness (or weight) of the yarn, today's spinning technology means that the number of plies doesn't always correspond directly to the thickness of the yarn.

However, in some countries, including Australia & the UK, the numbering system of yarn ply still refers to the thickness of the yarn, so it's possible to have a single ply 4ply yarn! - this means that the yarn is constructed of a single ply, but has the traditional thickness of a 4ply sock / fingering yarn).

Opal

Opal started in Berlin in 1978, selling natural wool and beechwood knitting needles. In the early 1980s Wolfgang Zwerger and Beate Göhring built a plant-dyeing facility in Altshausen, and the yarn we know as Opal launched in 1996.

Here's the clever part, and it's what makes an Opal ball an Opal ball: the colour is printed onto the yarn itself, not dyed skein by skein. So the pattern appears as you knit, striping and pooling straight from the ball. The printing, washing, steaming and balling all happen at their home in Hechingen, a place they fondly call 'the town of knitting'.

Most of the wool is a blend of roughly half German and half South American fleece. Since 2005 Opal have given more than €330,000 to Rettet den Regenwald, which buys up rainforest and puts it under protection.
