This yarn is 'in the oil', meaning the final process of scouring the spun yarn was bypassed. Scouring uses a lot of water to make the yarn look polished, so leaving it in the oil means that water is saved, especially as you repeat the process when you block. On blocking, the yarn blooms, softens and takes on the loveliest appearance. In the oil is also more suitable for machine knitters and handweavers as it helps lubricate as you work.

If you don't like the feel with the oil in it, simply wash the skeins prior to use. Carefully untwist the skein, keeping it in the 'loop' with the ties on, and leave it to soak in water with wool wash. Rinse with fresh water then hang to dry completely. Wind into a ball before using.

Yarn Weight vs Yarn Ply

"Ply" technically refers to the construction of the yarn. It's the number of strands that are twisted together to make a single piece of yarn. While "ply" historically related to the thickness (or weight) of the yarn, today's spinning technology means that the number of plies doesn't always correspond directly to the thickness of the yarn.

However, in some countries, including Australia & the UK, the numbering system of yarn ply still refers to the thickness of the yarn, so it's possible to have a single ply 4ply yarn! - this means that the yarn is constructed of a single ply, but has the traditional thickness of a 4ply sock / fingering yarn).

Dooish Shrug

I was gifted a Donagel Tweed skein bought for me on a friends trip to Ireland. I matched it with three different Dooish shades and made a granny square shrug. It handles quiet coarsely but the oil infused feel of the yarn takes you straight back to exactly where it came from, off the sheep's back, it also makes your hands soft while you working it up. I washed it as directed by Skein Sisters in a good quality wool wash, and after washing it, I can say it is truly come up a treat, so snugly and soft and the colours have become even more beautiful. so very happy with this yarn.

Fabulous Dooish Yarn

I recently purchased 10 skeins of this beautiful Dooish yarn from Skein Sisters in Sydney, and I love knitting with it so much, I'm purchasing another 10 in another colour.

Dooish (Worsted/10 ply)

I bought three skeins to make a cabled cowl in Mist Green and recieved my order promptly. The wool was lovely to work with, did not split and there were no joins in any of the skeins. It's come up beautifully soft and plump after washing to remove the final oil. Very happy. Thank you, Skein Sisters!

Spinning Yarns Weaving Tales

Jo of Spinning Yarns Weaving Tales in Victoria, Australia has been involved in textiles from early childhood. She studied textiles in the late 70s at Melbourne College of Textiles and then opened her own Art & Craft shop and Gallery at the ripe old age of 18… natural dyeing, spinning, knitting, knitwear design and weaving were her life. However, it was all put on hold when the babies came along. Finally, in 2010 the opportunity came to get back to what she missed… textiles, particularly weaving & knitting.

After finding there was a very limited range of interesting, natural weaving yarns combined with her 10 years of procurement and shipping experience, Spinning Yarns Weaving Tales was born.

It was inevitable that knitting yarns would soon follow when the right yarns presented themselves. The range now encompasses tweeds, Australian merino, silk, yak and more.
