Spinning Yarns Weaving Tales Tweed Marle is a 10ply worsted weight merino that brings the structure and charm of traditional tweed with a softer feel that’s easy to wear. Perfect for garments and accessories you’ll reach for again and again.

This yarn is made from two carefully matched colours twisted together, giving it a marled texture. Unlike rustic tweeds, Tweed Marle is 100% merino, so it feels smooth while still holding its shape beautifully. It’s ideal for jumpers, hats, scarves and blankets. The stitch definition is clear, the fabric has a satisfying weight, and little flecks of colour pop up through your knitting and crochet, adding a richness to the fabric.

Tweed Marle is spun 'in the oil' to reduce water waste during milling. This means you might notice a slightly different texture before washing, but it softens beautifully after a gentle soak.

Soft but structured, practical but beautiful, Tweed Marle is a great staple for any yarn stash. It has that classic tweed look with a smoother feel, and it brings both warmth and longevity to whatever you make.

This yarn is 'in the oil', meaning the final process of scouring the spun yarn was bypassed. Scouring uses a lot of water to make the yarn look polished, so leaving it in the oil means that water is saved, especially as you repeat the process when you block. On blocking, the yarn blooms, softens and takes on the loveliest appearance. In the oil is also more suitable for machine knitters and handweavers as it helps lubricate as you work.

If you don't like the feel with the oil in it, simply wash the skeins prior to use. Carefully untwist the skein, keeping it in the 'loop' with the ties on, and leave it to soak in water with wool wash. Rinse with fresh water then hang to dry completely. Wind into a ball before using.

Yarn Weight vs Yarn Ply

"Ply" technically refers to the construction of the yarn. It's the number of strands that are twisted together to make a single piece of yarn. While "ply" historically related to the thickness (or weight) of the yarn, today's spinning technology means that the number of plies doesn't always correspond directly to the thickness of the yarn.

However, in some countries, including Australia & the UK, the numbering system of yarn ply still refers to the thickness of the yarn, so it's possible to have a single ply 4ply yarn! - this means that the yarn is constructed of a single ply, but has the traditional thickness of a 4ply sock / fingering yarn).

Jo of Spinning Yarns Weaving Tales in Victoria, Australia has been involved in textiles from early childhood. She studied textiles in the late 70s at Melbourne College of Textiles and then opened her own Art & Craft shop and Gallery at the ripe old age of 18… natural dyeing, spinning, knitting, knitwear design and weaving were her life. However, it was all put on hold when the babies came along. Finally, in 2010 the opportunity came to get back to what she missed… textiles, particularly weaving & knitting.

After finding there was a very limited range of interesting, natural weaving yarns combined with her 10 years of procurement and shipping experience, Spinning Yarns Weaving Tales was born.

It was inevitable that knitting yarns would soon follow when the right yarns presented themselves. The range now encompasses tweeds, Australian merino, silk, yak and more.
