Spiral Grain is a 100% superwash extrafine merino, sport weight yarn. Different colours in each of the three plys work in harmony offering delightful and gradual colour changes. The yarn takes its name from the colourful plys twisting together mirroring the beauty of a tree's unusual natural spiral grain growth patterns. A little extra care will ensure you prolong the life of your projects. Urth Yarns are machine-washable on a cool, delicate cycle, however hand-washing in cold water with a small amount of wool wash is highly recommended. Lay flat to dry, never use a dryer. Washing your gauge swatch is advised, especially if using contrasted, dark, or saturated colours.

Yarn Weight vs Yarn Ply

"Ply" technically refers to the construction of the yarn. It's the number of strands that are twisted together to make a single piece of yarn. While "ply" historically related to the thickness (or weight) of the yarn, today's spinning technology means that the number of plies doesn't always correspond directly to the thickness of the yarn.

However, in some countries, including Australia & the UK, the numbering system of yarn ply still refers to the thickness of the yarn, so it's possible to have a single ply 4ply yarn! - this means that the yarn is constructed of a single ply, but has the traditional thickness of a 4ply sock / fingering yarn).

Urth Yarns

The name comes from Urth Caffe, a Los Angeles café one of the founders can't stay away from. He wanted a brand that gave something back to the earth, and there the name was, already waiting.

Every collection is hand-dyed in Turkey, in the brand's own studios in Mersin and Istanbul – crafted meticulously by the hands of talented women. One range is coloured with nothing but fruits, nuts and roots: pomegranate shells, acorns, grape leaves, boiled up in cauldrons and stirred like soup until the water gives up its colour. A portion of every sale goes to Trees for the Future, planting forest gardens on worn-out land in Africa.

Because they dye in small batches, dye lots can't be tracked – so grab everything for your project in one go. Nothing in nature is perfect, and yet everything is: that's the spirit they dye in.
