Fiddlesticks Harlequin is a fun 4ply sock yarn that creates stripes, spots and patterns as you work. No colour changes needed.

Made from a durable blend of superwash wool and nylon, it is a practical choice for socks that are built to last and easy to care for. The firm twist gives it strength and keeps the patterns clear. It is equally at home in mitts, baby knits or other accessories.

Each ball is dyed to match across pairs, so your socks can come out looking just the way you planned. The self-patterning design looks best when knitted close to the recommended gauge. One ball makes one sock.

Yarn Weight vs Yarn Ply

"Ply" technically refers to the construction of the yarn. It's the number of strands that are twisted together to make a single piece of yarn. While "ply" historically related to the thickness (or weight) of the yarn, today's spinning technology means that the number of plies doesn't always correspond directly to the thickness of the yarn.

However, in some countries, including Australia & the UK, the numbering system of yarn ply still refers to the thickness of the yarn, so it's possible to have a single ply 4ply yarn! - this means that the yarn is constructed of a single ply, but has the traditional thickness of a 4ply sock / fingering yarn).

Fiddlesticks

Fiddlesticks is owned by Texyarns, a Melbourne wholesaler that's been supplying yarn across Australia and New Zealand since 1952. For years they sat on the other side of the counter, working as an agent for the European spinners – the ones whose yarn ended up in the jumpers on the shelf.

Then hand knitting took off, and they decided to make their own. The name came about with rather less planning. Co-founder Peter Betros told Crochet Australia, "I don't know if it was inspiration, but I do know there was a lot of 'what do you think of this name…' And finally it was Fiddlesticks!"
