Possums have a devastating effect on the native wildlife and plant life in NZ. Decimating forests and devouring bird eggs and chicks, the environmental destruction has led to a commitment by the NZ Government to eradicate possums from all of New Zealand by 2050. 100% of possum fibre from NZ is wild caught. Yarn Weight vs Yarn Ply

"Ply" technically refers to the construction of the yarn. It's the number of strands that are twisted together to make a single piece of yarn. While "ply" historically related to the thickness (or weight) of the yarn, today's spinning technology means that the number of plies doesn't always correspond directly to the thickness of the yarn.

However, in some countries, including Australia & the UK, the numbering system of yarn ply still refers to the thickness of the yarn, so it's possible to have a single ply 4ply yarn! - this means that the yarn is constructed of a single ply, but has the traditional thickness of a 4ply sock / fingering yarn).

Naturally Yarns

Back in the 1980s Went Ferdinands ran a yarn business in Auckland, and he had one dream – to get a ball of yarn into every retailer in New Zealand, under a label of his own. He sat down to work out how, scribbled the word 'Naturally' on a scrap of paper, and there it was.

The first yarn was exactly as plain as it sounds: un-dyed New Zealand spun wool, sold in hanks. It stayed that way for a good long while. The label crossed to Australia in 2001, and that's when the fashion yarns started turning up alongside the plain wool.

Since 2007 the business has belonged to Vimar 1991, an Italian yarn producer – and it still keeps the 'Made in New Zealand' at the heart of the Naturally range, made from local wool and backing New Zealand wool growers wherever it can.
