Yarn Weight vs Yarn Ply

"Ply" technically refers to the construction of the yarn. It's the number of strands that are twisted together to make a single piece of yarn. While "ply" historically related to the thickness (or weight) of the yarn, today's spinning technology means that the number of plies doesn't always correspond directly to the thickness of the yarn.

However, in some countries, including Australia & the UK, the numbering system of yarn ply still refers to the thickness of the yarn, so it's possible to have a single ply 4ply yarn! - this means that the yarn is constructed of a single ply, but has the traditional thickness of a 4ply sock / fingering yarn).

Sesia

Manifattura Sesia has been spinning in Fara Novarese, in Piedmont, since 1963. It began making yarn for the Italian knitwear trade and still does – the range splits in two, the fashion houses on one side and hand knitters like us on the other. The balls came later: the hand-knitting collection arrived in 1970.

And it all happens in Italy. Choosing the fibre, combing, carding and spinning are done at the mill, and the dyeing goes to specialist dye houses in the same district. The fibres run right across the board: wool, silk, cashmere, mohair, alpaca, cotton and linen.

Sesia has a commitment to reconciling innovation and sustainability, from the selection of raw materials with respect for every living being, to the use of production processes with low environmental impact.
