Skein Sisters Fabulous Sock brings together softness, durability and hand-dyed colour. It’s ideal for socks, garments, shawls and more - and it’s dyed right here in Dulwich Hill, Sydney in our studio behind the shop.

Made from 80% Australian extra fine superwash merino and 20% nylon, Fabulous Sock is plump, smooth and gentle on the skin. The 19.5-micron merino gives it a soft handle, while the nylon adds strength, helping it hold its shape and resist pilling.

Fab Sock is ideal not just for socks but for any 4ply/fingering weight project. Whether you’re knitting, crocheting or weaving, it's perfect for shawls, cardigans, jumpers, scarves, tops, socks and more.

The yarn takes dye beautifully, available in more than 120 shades including soft pastels, rich jewel tones, earthy hues and playful neons. Choose from solid, semi-solid and speckled colourways.

Our dyer, Julia, takes care to design variegated colourways using her own specially developed colour application technique - so colours transform and blend beautifully in the finished fabric with little pooling.

Hand-dyed in Australia

As a hand-dyed yarn, each skein is unique. While we take great care to ensure consistency across dyelots, we recommend alternating skeins when working on larger projects.

Skein Sisters Yarns are hand-dyed in Dulwich Hill in Sydney, Australia on the country of the Bedigal, Wangal and Kameygal people of the Eora Nation.

Yarn Weight vs Yarn Ply

"Ply" technically refers to the construction of the yarn. It's the number of strands that are twisted together to make a single piece of yarn. While "ply" historically related to the thickness (or weight) of the yarn, today's spinning technology means that the number of plies doesn't always correspond directly to the thickness of the yarn.

However, in some countries, including Australia & the UK, the numbering system of yarn ply still refers to the thickness of the yarn, so it's possible to have a single ply 4ply yarn! - this means that the yarn is constructed of a single ply, but has the traditional thickness of a 4ply sock / fingering yarn).

Skein Sisters Yarns

Our own yarns were part of the dream from the very beginning – we always wanted a range that was truly ours. It started with Julia. She'd trained in fine art and printmaking, and one day we sent her off to a dyeing course on a hunch – she came back with colours so lovely we could have put them straight on the shelf. So we gave her a budget and six months to play, experiment and find her palette, and in January 2023 Skein Sisters Yarns was born.

Julia hand-dyes every skein herself in small batches – never more than eight to sixteen at a time – so each one carries that gentle depth and variation you only get by hand. What began in the kitchen of our office now happens in her own dedicated studio, tucked into the old beautician behind our shop.

We dye onto our own exclusive bases, milled for us from Australian merino, and we're slowly growing the range – we can never resist a luxurious fibre like silk. The palette has grown past 140 colours, always shifting as we retire old favourites and dream up new ones, with special shades and limited editions along the way.

Best of all, every colour can be dyed to order – so you can have almost any shade on almost any base, coloured especially for you.
