Fabulous Sock is a blend of 80% Australian extra fine superwash merino and 20% nylon. It's a plump and squishy sock yarn that is beautiful to use with a soft and smooth handle that glides through your hands. The Australian wool is 19.5 microns, which gives it the title of ‘extra fine merino’. It's soft enough to wear against your skin but not so soft that it's going to pill terribly.

With added nylon, Fabulous Sock is the best of all worlds. It's tough enough to make socks but it's also perfect for any other pattern that requires 4ply / sock or fingering weight yarn. Knitting, crochet and weaving, shawls, cardigans, jumpers, sweaters, scarves and accessories... you name it, it's perfect for them all.

Hand-dyed in Australia

As a hand-dyed yarn, each skein is unique. While we take great care to ensure consistency across dyelots, we recommend alternating skeins when working on larger projects.

Skein Sisters Yarns are hand-dyed in Dulwich Hill in Sydney, Australia on the country of the Bedigal, Wangal and Kameygal people of the Eora Nation.

Important Shipping Note: Items ordered with dyed-to-order yarn will be held and shipped together once your custom yarn is ready. If you’d like your other items sooner, please place a separate order. If you select Store Pick Up at checkout, please wait until you receive our SMS to say your order is ready to be picked up.

Yarn Weight vs Yarn Ply

"Ply" technically refers to the construction of the yarn. It's the number of strands that are twisted together to make a single piece of yarn. While "ply" historically related to the thickness (or weight) of the yarn, today's spinning technology means that the number of plies doesn't always correspond directly to the thickness of the yarn.

However, in some countries, including Australia & the UK, the numbering system of yarn ply still refers to the thickness of the yarn, so it's possible to have a single ply 4ply yarn! - this means that the yarn is constructed of a single ply, but has the traditional thickness of a 4ply sock / fingering yarn).

Skein Sisters Yarns

Our own yarns were part of the dream from the very beginning – we always wanted a range that was truly ours. It started with Julia. She'd trained in fine art and printmaking, and one day we sent her off to a dyeing course on a hunch – she came back with colours so lovely we could have put them straight on the shelf. So we gave her a budget and six months to play, experiment and find her palette, and in January 2023 Skein Sisters Yarns was born.

Julia hand-dyes every skein herself in small batches – never more than eight to sixteen at a time – so each one carries that gentle depth and variation you only get by hand. What began in the kitchen of our office now happens in her own dedicated studio, tucked into the old beautician behind our shop.

We dye onto our own exclusive bases, milled for us from Australian merino, and we're slowly growing the range – we can never resist a luxurious fibre like silk. The palette has grown past 140 colours, always shifting as we retire old favourites and dream up new ones, with special shades and limited editions along the way.

Best of all, every colour can be dyed to order – so you can have almost any shade on almost any base, coloured especially for you.
