Why you'll love it

Every so often a yarn turns up that makes you stop and just hold it for a moment. Camarose Snefnug is one of those. It's light, airy and full-bodied all at once, and the squish is real.

Snefnug has an unusual construction. A fine tube of organic cotton forms the core, and a soft blend of alpaca and merino is blown right into the middle of it. This is what gives Snefnug its airiness and its strength – it's feather-light in the hand, but it holds up beautifully.

It's a 10ply/aran weight that flies along on 4mm - 6mm needles, which makes it perfect for big, cosy, oversized jumpers and cardigans. It's gentle enough for babies and children too, and just right for scarves, hats and anything you want to live in all winter.

Snefnug comes two ways, and you'll find them both here. The main Snefnug range is dyed in a glorious palette – enough colour to lose an afternoon choosing. Alongside it sits Snefnug Natur, which is left completely undyed, in the natural shades the fibres grew in – creams and whites through latte, nougat, oak and pine, on to soft greys and a deep natural black.

There's one small difference between the two. The dyed Snefnug is spun from baby alpaca and extra fine merino, while Natur uses alpaca and merino in their natural, undyed state. Natur is every bit as soft, and because the fibres are left just as they grew, each natural shade carries a beautifully heathered depth rather than a flat, even tone. Both knit to exactly the same tension, so you can bring the dyed and the undyed together in one piece and let the naturals sit against the colours.

The fibres are as thoughtful as the spinning. The alpaca comes from Peru, the organic cotton from Egypt, and the merino is mulesing free. It's all spun by a family-owned mill in Italy.

One thing worth knowing before you cast on: hand wash your finished piece in a wool wash and dry it flat. Snefnug can shrink up to 7% in that first wash and will stretch back as you wear it, so knit your ribbing a little firm and a little narrow – it'll settle beautifully.

Yarn Weight vs Yarn Ply

"Ply" technically refers to the construction of the yarn. It's the number of strands that are twisted together to make a single piece of yarn. While "ply" historically related to the thickness (or weight) of the yarn, today's spinning technology means that the number of plies doesn't always correspond directly to the thickness of the yarn.

However, in some countries, including Australia & the UK, the numbering system of yarn ply still refers to the thickness of the yarn, so it's possible to have a single ply 4ply yarn! - this means that the yarn is constructed of a single ply, but has the traditional thickness of a 4ply sock / fingering yarn).
