Life in the Long Grass Sport Merino is a beautiful, firm but soft base with a good twist to the yarn. It creates beautifully textural stitches and good fabric structure, ideal for garments, accessories and more. We love it!

Coming in all the wonderful hand-dyed colours that Life in the Long Grass is renowned for, this 100% superwash merino is a 5ply/sport weight. It is wonderful for garments as it falls in between DK/Worsted and Sock weight yarns. It's quicker to knit up than sock weight yarns, but warm enough to wear much of the year. It's also perfect for shawls and other accessories.

Yarn Weight vs Yarn Ply

"Ply" technically refers to the construction of the yarn. It's the number of strands that are twisted together to make a single piece of yarn. While "ply" historically related to the thickness (or weight) of the yarn, today's spinning technology means that the number of plies doesn't always correspond directly to the thickness of the yarn.

However, in some countries, including Australia & the UK, the numbering system of yarn ply still refers to the thickness of the yarn, so it's possible to have a single ply 4ply yarn! - this means that the yarn is constructed of a single ply, but has the traditional thickness of a 4ply sock / fingering yarn).

Life in the Long Grass Yarn

Life in the Long Grass

We're smitten with Life in the Long Grass. It grew from a love of colour and wool, and you can feel both in every skein. Caroline Niland and her family brought a derelict, hundred-year-old farmhouse back to life at the foot of Mushermore Mountain in West Cork – wild heather, blanket bog and big Irish skies – and they've been dyeing small-batch yarn by hand there since 2014.

The colours come from an artist's eye turned on the world outside – Atlantic light, the fields, whatever's in front of them. They take their time and let the shades come out just right.

The wool comes from small farms in Ireland, England, Uruguay, Peru, Argentina, France and Portugal, and every bit of it is mulesing-free. Colour goes on with non-toxic acid dyes, low-impact fibre-reactive dyes and natural dyes, then a double-setting process holds it fast. They recycle the dye water, and the labels and packaging are recycled kraft paper.
