Get ready to immerse yourself in a world of colour, texture and knitting adventure! Join in the fun this year as Westknits celebrates 15 years of MKAL magic with the 2024 annual Westknits MKAL (Mystery Knit A Long)! The MKAL is knitting designer extraordinaire Stephen West's annual Mystery Shawl Knit Along, and this year’s shawl is named Go Go Dynamo.
This event is the biggest and most entertaining Knit A Long that Westknits hosts, with thousands of knitters participating worldwide, so it's not to be missed. You are sure to learn new techniques and find loads of inspiration from all the colourful shawls and wonderful variations which appear in the course of the MKAL.
Stephen says "This year's design is bursting with energy, featuring bold, playful details that will keep you on your toes...This playful shawl will feature two contrasting colours. Whether you like neons, neutrals, mohair dares, or complete surprises, there's something for everyone in this lively edition of the MKAL."
Here's what you need to know...the adventure begins with yarn and colour suggestions released late on Thursday 29th August. Pattern signups open at midnight on 1 September (AEST) on westknits.com or Ravelry, and you can sign up anytime, even after the clues have started. Follow along on socials in the lead up to the pattern release throughout September in anticipation of clue 1 which drops on Thursday 3 October 2024.
We'll then knit together throughout the month of October. Each section of the pattern is released every week for 4 weeks until the final design is revealed. The Mystery Shawl is a complete surprise, so when you sign up by purchasing the pattern, you only know what types of yarn and needles you need along with Stephen's colour recommendations. The overall shape and dimensions of the shawl are part of the mystery! All we know is Go Go Dynamo will be a beautiful show-stopping shawl knitted from 2 contrasting colours with the option to add in mohair/suri if you want to.
Sign up to the MKAL by purchasing the pattern on westknits.com or Ravelry. Once you've signed up, Westknits will progressively send you the 4 clues of the pattern once a week from 3rd October until the final clue release on the 24th.
The pattern will be suitable for adventurous beginners (you should already know how to knit, purl, increase, decrease, and read a pattern), and it will be enjoyable for more experienced knitters too. There is so much support throughout the KAL so you will find a lot of help and tips on completing each section in the MKAL 2024 Ravelry group. There will be step-by-step video tutorials in Westknits' Youtube channel along the entire way so you can learn all the techniques and confidently knit a wearable work of art with your knitting friends & community.
Previous MKALs have resulted in some of the most loved and treasured Westknits shawl patterns including Exploration Station, The Doodler and Shawlography. With over 8400 projects on Ravelry for Exploration Station alone, you'll be knitting with thousands of MKAL participants from all over the world. This year’s shawl requires 400g of fingering weight yarn, split between two colours.
