Length: 220mWeight: 50g
A rustic, warm, single-ply blend of llama and Peruvian Highland wool – light, strong and made for classic colourwork knits.
If you love a yarn with real character, Camarose Tynd Lamauld is going to be a favourite. It's rustic, light and remarkably warm, and it blooms into something quite lovely once it's been knitted and washed.
Tynd Lamauld (pronounced 'Tin Llama-old', and meaning thin llama wool) is a blend of llama and Peruvian Highland wool, spun as a single strand. Llama fibre is a beautiful thing to work with – naturally free of lanolin, light and strong, with hollow fibres that trap the warmth, which is what makes it so much warmer than sheep's wool on its own. That combination of warmth, strength and lightness is exactly why it suits classic Nordic colourwork, shawls, scarves, baby blankets and anything that needs to be warm without being heavy.
The colours are beautifully heathered too. Look closely and you'll see lighter and deeper shades spun right through each one, so the fabric has real depth to it rather than sitting flat. It's a good part of what gives Tynd Lamauld its rustic character, and it's lovely in colourwork – the shades sit together softly instead of fighting each other.
It's a fine 4ply, and it goes a long way – 220 metres in every 50 gram ball.
Two things to remember. First, Tynd Lamauld doesn't really show itself until it's been knitted and washed, so do knit a swatch and wash it before you judge the softness. Llama grows fibres of very different lengths, and the loose ones wash away over the first few washes – your fabric gets softer each time. Second, because it's spun as a single strand, it has a tendency to twist a little when you work stocking stitch in the round with one strand. Worth knowing before you cast on a plain jumper body.
Tynd Lamauld is the same quality as Camarose Lamauld 10ply, so you can hold two strands of Tynd together as an alternative to Lamauld, or work the two side by side.
