Get ready to immerse yourself in a world of yarn, colour, texture and knitting adventure! The 16th Annual Westknits MKAL (Mystery Knit A Long) is here! The MKAL is knitting designer extraordinaire Stephen West's annual Mystery Shawl Knit Along, and this year’s shawl is the Mystery MusiKAL.
This event is the biggest and most entertaining Knit A Long that Westknits hosts, with thousands of knitters participating worldwide, so it's not to be missed. You are sure to learn new techniques and find loads of inspiration from all the dazzling colourplays and wonderful variations which appear in the course of the MKAL. You can expect a collage of bold stitches, unexpected directions and vibrant colour play.
Stephen says "This year we're knitting in four-part harmony! You'll need four contrasting colours of fingering weight yarn to compose your masterpiece. Go for a subtle gradient that whispers like a gentle ballad, or a set of bold, clashing shades that bring down the house. Your Mystery MusiKAL shawl will crescendo into a show-stopping finale!"
This year’s shawl requires 400g of fingering weight yarn, 100g of four different colours.

Please note: our images show colour options of mohair or suri for each kit. Mohair/suri is not included with your kit but if you want to take the mohair dare you can choose your fluffy yarn from our range of mohair.
Here's what you need to know...
The adventure begins with yarn and colour suggestions which were released on Thursday 4th September. Pattern signups are open on Ravelry, and you can sign up anytime, even after the clues have started. Follow along on socials in the lead up to the pattern release throughout September before clue 1 drops on Thursday 2 October 2025.

We'll then knit together with Stephen throughout the month of October. Each section of the pattern is released every week for 4 weeks until the final design is revealed. The Mystery Shawl is a complete surprise, and the overall shape and dimensions of the shawl are part of the mystery! All we know is Mystery MusiKAL will be a beautiful show-stopping shawl knitted from 4 colours with the option to add in mohair/suri if you dare.
The pattern will be suitable for adventurous beginners (you should know how to knit, purl, increase, decrease, and read a pattern), and it will be enjoyable for more experienced knitters too. There is so much support throughout the KAL so you will find a lot of help and tips on completing each section in the MKAL 2025 Ravelry group. There will be step-by-step video tutorials in Westknits' Youtube channel along the entire way..
