Learn how to choose and combine colours with confidence in your Fair Isle knitting. Using Mary Jane's Tamto Mitts pattern, we'll delve into the historical use of colour in Fair Isle knitting. We will analyse how different colour combinations can completely change a motif's appearance.
We will be knitting a quick swatch to illustrate all the new concepts we'll be learning.
This class provides a good overview at combining colours plus Mary Jane will share her extensive knowledge of fair isle knitting, the traditions of this wonderful craft and offer lots of tips on stranded knitting techniques.
When: Thursday 6 June 2024, 6pm-9pm
We will also be having a fun social night with Mary Jane on Friday 7 June. Save the date! More info to come next year.
Class Level: Intermediate
Technique requirements: Some experience with stranded colourwork
Supplies to bring:
- Six or more colours of fingering weight yarn (non-superwash is best), at least 3 light colours and 3 dark colours; 15-20m of each colour. More colours will allow for more choice and experimentation. Shetland wool is ideal because of its vast array of colors.
- Mary Jane encourages you to choose your own colours, but there's no shame in using the colours in the sample. Note, in class, we will be making a swatch, and thus you can just bring enough yarn for that: six or more colours of fingering weight yarn; 20-25mof each colour.
- Your preferred needle for working small-diameter pieces in the round, 3.25mm dps or long circular needle for magic loop
- tapestry needle;
- scissors;
- We will be putting together yarn kits in early 2024 and will email you when they're available.
Homework: None
