Ever looked at a knitted piece and thought… this could use a little extra sparkle?
In this delightful workshop you’ll learn how to use simple embroidery stitches to add beautiful decorative details to your knitted garments and accessories. From woolly mittens to cosy sweaters or even a crocheted cotton top, a few well placed stitches can transform something lovely into something truly special.
Sheila will guide you through the basics of embroidering on knitted fabric, showing you how colour, texture and stitch patterns can add personality and charm to your knits. You’ll experiment with a range of stitches, play with design ideas, and begin a small project so you can see your new skills come to life.
This is a relaxed, hands on class where curiosity is encouraged and creativity is very welcome. Perfect for absolute beginners!
What you’ll learn

Class details
• Class duration: 5hr – including breaks. Please bring your lunch and snacks. Refridgerator and microwave are available.
• Skill level: Absolute beginner. No embroidery experience required.
Important information for this class
What is supplied for this class (for you to use and keep):
- we will provide a knitted swatch in 4ply/fingering weight yarn
- a 5" embroidery hoop
- 6 x 1m pieces of coloured wool in varying thicknesses
- 2 x tapestry and 2 x crewel needles
- a piece of plain woven fabric such as calico or linen, approx 20cm x 20cm
- 2 x 20cm pieces of water soluble stablizer
- printed class notes
What you need to bring with you (You have homework!):
- Prior to the class you will need to knit a swatch in stockinette stitch using a light-coloured, DK/8ply woollen yarn such as Fiddlesticks Peppin 8. Knit the swatch to be 15cm wide x 30cm deep in stockinette stitch on 4mm needles. Gauge is not important for this swatch but you do need to make it comfortably 15cm wide x 30cm deep.
- HB pencil
- Notepad for sketching and taking notes
- small sharp pointed scissors for cutting wool threads
- scissors for cutting paper
- a small ruler (approx. 20cm)
- Lunch and snack. And a water bottle if you prefer. Tea and (instant) coffee are available.
- You are also welcome to bring a knitted item you're thinking of adding embroidery to, to discuss (and plan!) with Sheila on the day.

Your Teacher - Sheila Clancy
Sheila has been passionate about embroidery for as long as she can remember. She first picked up a needle and thread as a child and has been happily stitching ever since.
Over the years she has developed her skills through a mix of self-exploration and study with expert embroidery teachers, building a rich knowledge of many different embroidery techniques. For the past fifteen years she has continued to deepen her practice while sharing her love of fibre arts with others.
Sheila is an experienced and generous teacher who has led workshops across a wide range of creative crafts, including patchwork, felting, embroidery, fabric printing, sewing and doll making. She is also an enthusiastic knitter, which makes her especially delighted to help knitters discover the joy of adding embroidery to their handmade pieces.
A member of the Embroiderers’ Guild of NSW, Sheila is deeply inspired by historical needlework traditions. She loves exploring traditional techniques while encouraging creativity and personal expression, helping students find their own style while learning the foundations of the craft.
In her classes you’ll find a warm, encouraging atmosphere where curiosity is welcome and every stitch is part of the adventure.
Terms and conditions
- Full payment is required prior to the start of the class to confirm your spot.
- Minimum numbers - All classes require a minimum of three people in order to go ahead and, depending on the class, a maximum of up to 8. If your class or workshop does not have the minimum number of students, the class will be postponed and you will be notified within three days of the class date if it has been cancelled or changed. We cannot be held liable for travel or any other costs in the event of a cancellation.
- If your class is postponed or cancelled you can use the amount paid to transfer to another event/activity, use as a store credit, or be issued a full refund.
Cancelling a class
- Up to 7 days before the class - you are able to cancel, postpone or swap a class up to 7 days prior to the class date and can receive a full refund.
- 7 days-24 hours before the class - we are able to offer a credit but we cannot guarantee a full refund unless another booking fills your spot.
- Less than 24 hours before the class - no credit or refund available.
