8 Ply DK Weight Yarn

Yes. Australia names yarn weights by ply, and 8ply is the same weight as DK, short for double knit, in the US and UK. It sits between 4ply and 10ply, and most 8ply yarns give you around 220 to 300 metres per 100 grams.

Most of our 8ply yarns suggest needles between 3.5mm and 4.5mm, with 4mm the most common. Your pattern will tell you which size to start with, and a tension square will show you whether you need to go up or down a size to match it.

Just about anything. 8ply is the go-to weight for jumpers, cardigans, vests, beanies, scarves and blankets, and it's the weight many of us learnt to knit with. It also works up into lovely crochet blankets, bags and garments.

Look for a soft yarn you can wash easily. A superwash merino 8ply can go in the machine on a gentle wool cycle, and cotton is a lovely choice for warmer weather. You'll find plenty of ideas in our patterns for babies and children.

It's one of the most popular weights for crochet. Cotton 8ply is a favourite for amigurumi and homewares because it works up quickly, and merino 8ply makes soft, warm blankets and garments. Check the ball band for the suggested hook size and adjust it to match your pattern's tension.
